A Tale for the Time Being Through the Lens of Schrodinger's Cat

Katie Roessel EN 487 21st Century Literature & Time 9/19/22 A Tale for the Time Being: Through the Lens of Schrodinger's Cat     "A Tale for the Time Being" is a novel that is, in all senses of the word, incredibly meta. The story itself has so many layers and different perspectives that eventually become entangled, despite being a decade and thousands of miles apart. We read Nao's diary from the perspective of Ruth, seeing her thoughts and analyses in the margins as footnotes, and then we read Ruth's third-person narrative about her perspective on Nao's diary and Ruth's own personal struggles, which she reflects upon based off what she reads in Nao's diary.     Throughout the novel, one of Ruth's biggest mysteries while uncovering the secrets within the lunchbox and the diary was Nao herself: did she really exist? Or was her diary a fabrication of someone's cruel imagination? This mystery grew even deeper when Ruth could not find a single...

Brown Girl Dreaming

I found the second half of Jacqueline Woodson’s Brown Girl Dreaming extremely interesting. One aspect that stood out to me was the relationship that Woodson creates between the Civil Rights Movement and time in the final few poems of the novel. I found this relationship most notable in the poem “what i believe.” In this poem, Woodson lists the things that she believes in, ranging from religious concepts to human rights. More specifically, I believe this relationship is established most strongly in the final two lines of the poem, as Woodson writes, “I believe in one day and someday and this / perfect moment called Now ”(318). In this phrase, Woodson highlights the fact that when one maintains hope for the future, they are still able to acknowledge the positive aspects of the present moment. Even though social change may not occur immediately, each action taken in the present is necessary in establishing a future based on equality and justice....

No Country for Eight-Spot Butterflies

Culture, Time, and Legacy   In the first part of this reading, what truly stood out to me was Aguon’s connection to time as it relates to culture and history. Throughout the collection, Aguon crafted a sense of time that remained ever present, yet unobtrusive. While not too often the center of the piece, time made its impact. Most obviously, the story of time interwove itself with the story of his people. Simultaneously, it felt as if the pieces were deeply intimate—as the introduction described: “This book is an embrace” (2)—and yet drew back to view the entire world. Injustice, another theme in this semester, manifests in his discussions of his people, time, and culture. In this reading, Aguon highlights the relationship between the present and past, as explicitly shown in his titular piece “No Country for Eight-Spot Butterflies”. He writes of the horrifying militarization the Unites States’ military imposes (and imposed) on his country, which threaten the legacies of his past th...
